Family On February 27th, 1902 Olive and John Ernst Steinbeck had their third child, John Steinbeck. John's parents were both educated professionals. Olive was a school teacher, while John Ernst was the Monterey county treasurer. His mother was interested with the arts, which influenced John to have his love of literature. John had three sisters. Ester and Elizabeth which were his older sisters and his younger sister named Mary. John was married three times, in 1930-1942 he got married to Carol Henning. In 1943-1948 he married Gwyndolyn Conger and had two sons Thomas (1944), and John (1946). And John's third wife was Elaine Anderson Scott in 1950 until his death.
Childhood John was the only son of Olive and John Steinbeck. He was raised with modest means. John was a very shy but smart kid and often he would lock himself in his room and write poems. John received his love for literature from his mother. He excelled in sports and loved track and basketball. John Steinbeck decided when he was fourteen to become a writer.
Jobs John had many jobs during his life to support him. Before coming to New York, John worked as a laboratory assistant and a farm laborer to support himself through six years at Stanford University. After he came to New York, he worked as a reporter, and part of a construction crew building garden in 1925. Undiscouraged, John went back to California to do serious writing. In 1939-1945 Steinbeck served as a foreign correspondent in World War II.
