HOW OLD IS EARTH?

HOW DO WE KNOW THIS?

  • William Smith found that fossils were found in many different layers, and others only in one.
  • The fossils found in only one layer could be used as an indicator of a layer. All the same layers that an index fossil would've been formed at the same time.
  • Could predict the order of rocks in an outcrop

WHAT ARE FOSSILS?

  • The remains or impressions of once living organisms like animals or plants stored in a petrified way or as a mold or cast
  • Fossils show the remains of once living organisms, most which are extinct. Fossils are clustered to known periods of geological time.

TYPES OF FOSSILS

  • Mold fossils
  • Cast fossils
  • Fossil fuels
  • Actual remains
  • Petrified wood

WHAT IS THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE?

  • The geological time scale is a scale that says what happened since Earth was created. The geological time scale is divided into periods of time.

THE LAW OF SUPERPOSITION

  • The law of superposition states that, In a sequence of layered rocks, a given bed must be older than any bed on top of it. Superstition provides information about the age of the rock and fossils in them. The rocks layer when particles settle from air or water.
