DEFINITION
- Strep throat is an infection of the pharynx and tonsils. It is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation and pain in the throat.
The infection is generally transmitted by direct contact of somebody else who has strep.
HOW YOU CATCH STREP
- Through sneezing
- Through coughing
- Sharing drinks
- Kissing
SYMPTOMS
- Sore throats with white patches
- Fever
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Trouble swallowing
The symptoms of strep throat typically develop within five days of exposure to the bacteria.
Treatment is important to reduce complications. Untreated strep can be dangerous it is associated with complications such as kidney disorders
ANTIBIOTICS
- The most common antibiotics prescribed are penicillin and amoxicillin
- After about 24 hours on antibiotics the patient should be non-contagious
AT HOME CARE
- Things like drinking warm liquids such as lemon water and tea, or drinking cold liquids to help numb the throat. Taking some cough drops, and also gargling salt water
Strep throat is hard to prevent but the best way to prevent strep is to stay away from anyone who has been diagnosed with it, and to wash your hands multiple times a day.
