3 main reasons standards are important

  • Provide a common set of expectations
  • Clarify expectations
  • Raise expectations

ISTE

International society for technology in education

Iste

  • Provides a common set of expectations across states and localities
  • Clarifies how educators can support student learning with technology
  • Raises expectations by creating an awareness of what can be accomplished

Standards are criteria. Criteria defines what is expected. (The content you are expected to teach.)

Compliances and consequences make standards different from other types of expectations.

Compliance

  • Refers to who is subject to the standards and what basis.
  • This is to make sure you are complying with the standards.
  • One way to check if this is being accomplished is an administrator or another teacher may observe your classroom.

Consequences

  • What happens if you do not meet the expectations
  • If this happens you may be limited to employment opportunities

Stages in technology integration

Technology integration is more than introducing computers. This requires change to many instructional components including:

  • the resources being used
  • roles the teachers preform
  • the nature of the instructional activities and
  • the roles the students play

New learning experiences allow the students and teachers to work together to address the requirement of the curriculum while taking into account the students needs, interests, and preferences.

This type of learning allows students to

  • Identify and describe real world problems
  • This can include students using computer software (internet sources or presentation) and allows them to work as professionals

Similarites bewteen teacher and student technology standards

Early stages of technology integration seem boring for both teacher and student. Teachers are telling the kids what to do and not really engaging with them

Later stages of technology seem to be more fun and engaging for both. The students are able to do more with technology and relate themselves to what they are learning.

I feel I am in the later stage of technology integration (transformative). We use technology for everything. We are able to use many different forms of software for presentations, homework, etc. At this point in time we are surrounded by technology.
