In 1835 Batman travelled to port Phillip bay by boat to create a settlement in the place we call Melbourne. On the 6th of June he met with 8 elders of the wurundjeri tribe to sign the treaty

He traded: 20 blankets, 30 axes, 130 knives, 100 pairs of scissors, 40 looking glasses , 250 hankies, 18 shirts, 4 jackets, 4 suits, 150 pounds of flour and other gifts for 240,000 hectares of land

The treaty was signed on merri creek near where rushall station is now

He wanted the land to farm sheep and cattle

I think the Batman treaty was really unfair because the aboriginal people didn’t know what they were giving and what they were getting. The elders thought that they were just giving Batman and his crew safe passage through the land. Batman brought a translator from NSW but he didn’t speak the language of the wurunjeri people. It was like he was tricking them because he was stronger at the time
