PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THERMAL ENERGY PROJECT

BY HALAH SALMAN

PROJECT ONE: DEVICE
(Maximizing energy transfer)
I am going to have two ice cubes in two separate cups and one of the cups will be in the side of the device that is covered in black material and one cup will be on the side that is open.

INVESTIGATION QUESTION;

DOES BLACK MATERIAL REALLY ABSORB HEAT?

HYPOTHESIS:
My prediction is that, the side with the black cloth will absorb more heat and make the ice cubes melt faster than the side with no heat.

MY DRAFT AND MY SKETCHES;

TIME LAPSE VIDEOS & PHOTOS;

Times:
Cup 1(no cloth):
31 mins and 28 secs
Cup 2:
23 mins and 56 secs

CONCLUSION:
Black does absorb heat! I doubted it when I first started melting but that was mostly because I gave up to fast. As I got midway into the melting process, my time lapses on my phone kept stopping so it left out a huge part of it, which I wasn't to happy about. I had to move a lot because the sun wasn't really hitting the device so I had to push it back every couple minutes. But overall I was pretty happy that I predicted what happened correctly!

PROJECT TWO:DIFFERENT MATERIALS
designing an investigation to show that the amount of energy transferred for different materials. can be measured by the temperature change of an object. Proving that when the temperature of an object changes, energy is transferred.

I will be melting two different materials/objects that have the same mass with a hair dryer, and seeing which of the objects will melt faster or slower. (which of them will need more energy)
I will be using 2 crayons and 5 pieces of chocolate.

HYPOTHESIS:
I think the crayons will need more energy transfer because from my general knowledge, I know that crayons have wax in them and wax requires more energy transfer/heat to melt it.

Times

Crayons:
9 mins 56 secs

Chocolate:
1 min 23 secs

Independent variable:Setting&hairdryer
Dependent variable:Objects

Conclusion:
I was right again! I predicted that the crayons needed more energy transfer, because it included ingredients that needed lots of energy to melt. I think that the chocolate melted way faster (needed less energy transfer) because it was made from natural ingredients.
