INFORMATION PROCESSING THEORY

* sensory * short term * long term

sensory memory processes information brought in by the senses for brief periods of time - anywhere from 1/2 to 3 seconds. This function can only hold information in five to seven elements at a time. A telephone number is a good example of a seven digit number that can be taken into the sensory memory at once.

information is moved From the sensory memory to the working memory or is deleted or forgotten entirely. This part of the memory is temporary until it is assigned meaning, linked to other information or inferences are made.

Once meaning is made, information is then moved to the long-term memory. Information can be stored here for a long period of time or over the entire lifetime.
