The best answers to the best life have not changed

What are your questions?

Habakkuk 1:1-11

The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received. Habakkuk’s Complaint. How long, Lord, must I call for help,
but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?

Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.

“Look at the nations and watch and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your day that you would not believe, even if you were told. I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth
to seize dwellings not their own.

They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law to themselves and promote their own honor. Their horses are swifter than leopards fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;

they all come intent on violence.
Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand.
They mock kings and scoff at rulers. They laugh at all fortified cities; by building earthen ramps they capture them. Then they sweep past like the wind and go on—guilty people, whose own strength is their god.”

Who is Habbakuk?

  • One who embraces
  • Press to the heart
  • Just before 1st captivity
  • "Neb" was on his way
  • Asking Questions around 605 BC
No little about his personal story

Name means strong embrace

Press to the heart

Habakkuk was one who held his people close and saw it as his responsibility to bring his people's concerns before the Lord

Just the opposite of what a prophet is usually seen doing, which is bringing the message of God to people....

Saw a seemingly hopeless cultural environment fraught with evil now facing certain desruction with the impending arrival of King Nebuchadnezzar

If there ever was the ideal person to bring your questions about God, it would be Habakkuk, apparently a compassionate shepherd/prophet who felt the heartbreak of his people personally.

AND WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM HIM.....?

Face Reality

reality can be hard

Real environment....

  • I call.....no answer
  • I pray.....no answer
  • Trouble and sorrow
  • Evil people reign
  • Destruction
  • Continual destruction
  • Strife and conflict

verse 1-4.....

I call - God doesn't seem to be listening

I pray - people are not rescued rather keep on being injured and their homes destroyed

Immoral behavior leading to trouble and sorrow

God knows - tolderates - word for looking right at something evil and doing nothing

mischief
misery
travail
sorrow
caused by evil people

Destruction - robbery, ruin, violence abound

Sgrife and conflict - words describing verbal confrontations and physcial altercations

Real results....

  • Legal system is...
  • overwhelmed
  • rendered ineffective
  • appears feeble
  • justice never prevails

Real results....

  • Righteous are....
  • surrounded
  • outnumbered
  • hemmed in
  • influence hindered
Justice perverted....

unable to fulfill its intended and proper role

Evil

the problem
The number 1 reason people think God is a joke

He is either non existent

or weak and uncaring.....

God's Answer

will amaze you!
Draw your attention to the national level

God tells Habakkuk to look at the big picture

My plan will amaze you

you will be rendered speechless,

you will be dumbfounded

You will find it unbelieveable!

I am going to raise up the Babylonians...

King Nebuchadnezzar.....as my instrument of judgment, they are worse than the current sin among the Jews

Babylonians

  • ruthless impetuous
  • thieves feared
  • self-promoting lawless
  • powerful violent
  • arrogant over confident
  • slavers and guilty/careless
  • swift destructive
  • worship their own strength
ruthless - showing great hostilitly and animosity

impetuous - no self control, unpredictable, hasty, not the kind of people who think things through, but act instead

thieves - taking what is not theirs

feared and dreaded - panic sets in when they arrive

Some Principles

  • Don't confuse silence with God being out of of control
  • God's timing is not our timing
  • Evil has an expiration date
  • Judgement is overcome by faith
Bablyon had an expiration date and so do evil nations

Evil rulers have an expiration date

2 Peter 3:6 ff 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b] That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
