I&D Reductionism & Holism

Reductionism

  • Belief that behaviour can be explained by breaking it down into specific parts
  • E.g. Machine is the sum of parts. Individual parts responsible for specific tasks

Levels of Reductionism

  • Lowest level - biological
  • Mid level - psychological explanation
  • Highest level - Cultural & Social expectations

Biological Reductionism

 Aggression - MAOA-L (Brunner), serotonin. Schizophrenia (Dopamine Hypothesis). OCD

Environmental Reductionism

 Attachment - learning theory - mother and food (conditioning) = special attachment. Also SLT

Interactionist Approach

 Biological and environmental - e.g. Caspi. Diathesis-stress (Phobias, Schizophrenia, OCD). 

Holism

 Gestalt psychology - human mind and behaviour as a whole

Gestalt

  • Individuals react as an organized whole rather than a stimulus-response
  • What we see only makes sense when viewed as a whole

Cognitive approach

1Sum of all parts makes the whole. E.g. Memory
