PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Quorum Sensing

What is Quorum Sensing

  • system of stimuli and response
  • correlated to population density
  • allows cells to express energetically expensive processes at certain times
bacteria seem boring but their sense of communication is very advanced.

We as humans..

  • Humans have trillions of cells including bacteria which are important
  • We are huge organisms and bacteria would be useless against us and our immune system if they acted independently.
There are 10 trillion bacteria in or on you at any given time. They cover you in an invisible blanket that sheilds you from your environment. They help in digestion, make vitamins and educate your immune system.

Why is sensing important?

  • It enables bacteria to talk to each other to do a job.
  • This job could be beneficial or harmful to us
  • This is how bacteria communicate....

Example of Sensing in Vibrio fisheri

  • this bacteria enables bioluminescense
  • Independly they don't make light but in a community they do
Vibrio fisheri is a bacteria that lives in the Hawaiian bobtail squid.
When in enough number, the bacteria will flouresce. Independently, however, the bacteria will not flouresce.

Example of sensing in humans

  • Few bacteria that release toxins would have no effect on you
  • Pathengenicity is controlled by quorum sensing

Species communicate with each other via molecules

The triangles = light-producing hormones

A single cell will lose its hormones when they are alone

When they are together making this hormone in a certain amount, they light turns on. They are talking to each other and telling each other to activate the hormone.

This is the biochemical mechanism behind quorum sensing.
