MAJOR DEPRESSION

WHAT IS IT?

  • HAVING FEELINGS OF SADNESS, EMPTINESS, ANGRY OUTBURSTS
  • Losing interests in normal activities, Slow speaking, thinking ,and body movements
  • Lack of energy,Changes in appetite and weight loss
  • Diagnosis-doctor must hear about specific symptoms of depression
  • and give a physical examination. The doctor also talks with the patient.

HOW COMMON IS DEPRESSION

  • It effects more than 19 million Americans each year.
  • Depression is more common among women than men.

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

  • Depression is caused by genes, brain chemistry,and medical conditions.
  • It can also be caused by your social environment and hormones.
  • Just because it is in your genes does not mean you will become depressed.
  • Depression is influenced by your environment including
  • Stress at home, work, coping with losing a loved one, and traumatic events.

WHAT IS GOING WRONG IN NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • 3 neurotransmitters in brain are dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin
  • Depressions is caused by an increase/decrease in neurotransmitters .
  • Theses 3 neurotransmitters are alerted in the disorder.

TREATMENT

  • Rehab, therapy,medication, sleep, exercise and nutrition.
  • Exercise triggers the growth of new brain cells and connections
  • Depression is not just about chemical imbalance in the brain.
  • Medication will relieve some of the depression symptoms but not cure it.
  • Depression takes time to heal.

AFFECTING PATIENT AND FAMILY

  • The patient has a loss of interest in hobbies and other activities.
  • They feel hopeless and have guilty feelings. These are before treatment.
  • With medicine treatment it alerts the balance of certain chemicals in the brain.
  • Medicine effects are weird dreams, dry mouth and jitteriness.
  • Family is affected by worrying about it and not knowing how to help.
