Why is intellectualism necessary for a stabile society?

In the article, “The Responsibility of Intellectuals,” with the main contributor, Noam Chomsky, explains about why intellectuals are necessary for society.

Chomsky is the Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and laureate professor at the University of Arizona.

This work is located in a series of articles found in the UCL PRESS.

In this presentation, I will cover three reasons about why intellectuals are necessary for a stabile society.

Speaking truth to the powerless:

Most of the time, there lies a lack of knowledge in those that have no power or influence in society. In this case, Chomsky emphasizes that those with little to no power need to be guided by intellectuals with truth, creating, “the possibility of their helping to bring about change” (11). Intellectuals must take on the duty of teaching those who need truth, for society to grow better for the people.

For example, in Fahrenheit 451, Montag, who was forcefully taught to go against intellectuality, was positively affected by Clarissa. She exposes to him the truth about how life used to be, safe with everyone being able to believe in their own beliefs.

Taking action for good:

Truth is not the only thing that is needed for society to be upright. Activism is also necessary for society regarding the upright change for stability. Some people may know what is right, but never take action. Intellectuals need to show how to enable ideas so it is used for changing and forming civilization, since, “Activism is often most powerful when it includes the element of demonstrating the art of the possible” (Chomsky 19). Activism is a strong way to bring stability to a corrupted society.

Furthermore, in Fahrenheit 451, Montag is influenced by Fabre to continue to start reading books. He also comes up with plans to stop the firemen, who represent anti-intellectuals, reflecting on his activist development.

To defend the Civic Space:

The intellectual is the line of defense that stands between the government and the civil rights of people. Chomsky states that another duty of intellectuals is to, “defend the civic space… and show solidarity its those human rights defender” (20). Locations all over the globe, such as Hong Kong, are facing political issues with the basic human rights being infringed, and intellectuals are necessary to bring change and stability for the minds of the people and government, ultimately bringing peace.

Moreover, a major theme in Fahrenheit 451 is that there is no freedom of speech or belief in the society. If citizens let the government infringe on their basic human rights, the world will end up like that of Bradbury’s novel, inflexible and rigid.
