This session will focus around pilgrimage and the history of pilgrimage. It will put in context what we are doing and why we are not simply going on a trip.

Gather and watch the psychological study. The goal is to count the number of times the WHITE team passes the ball. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo&noredirect=1
Most people will fail to see the gorilla. That is the focus of pilgrimage. We have to be aware as we go through the journey together for where, when and how God is working. Sometimes it takes someone in the group to raise our awareness so everyone can see God’s handiwork.

Opening Prayer

Prayer Before a Journey
Lord our God, before you there are no secrets; nothing is hidden from your eyes
and nothing happens without your permission.
Grant me the happiness of beginning this pilgrimage entrusted to you;
permit me to go and to return in peace and tranquility, in your infinite love and mercy.
Accompany me with your loving security and direct my footsteps
with the steady love of your heart, keeping me always close to you, Lord.
May I see clearly the obstacles of my journey,
and may I keep safe from affliction and despair,
thanks to your blessing and care. Blessed are you, O Eternal God;
you have protected me in such a way that by the light of your presence
I shall always find new roads
and fulfilling answers to my yearnings.
Amen.

Why are we here?

  • More than chaperone
  • Accompany teens
  • Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage is an ancient tradition of journeying to a place that is of importance.
For some cultures this is not religious at all. For some, it is an expectation of their faith (the Muslim faith expects each person to make pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life). For Catholic Christians, pilgrimage has become equally about the journey as the destination.
In the Middle Ages, pilgrims would journey to the Holy Land, to walk where Jesus walked. When that became impossible due to safety concerns, a version of the pilgrimage came to them in the form of the Stations of the Cross.
Catholics will often make pilgrimage to Rome. During a Jubilee Year (last one was just last year, pilgrims journeying to Rome walk through the Holy Door to receive the Papal Indulgence. St. Francis of Assisi requested a similar indulgence for St. Mary of the Angels basilica in Assisi each year.

So there are certain things that we all need to have in order for this to be a successful pilgrimage...first and foremost is flexibility. While we have tried our best to plan for every contingency, those of you who have gone to multiple NCYC's can tell you about party buses and having to move hotels and broken down buses and all sorts of other adventures...which is why it is so important for you, as the adult leaders, to always set the tone! The teens are going to take their cues from YOU! If they hear you complaining, it gives them permission to complain. But if the
