PRESENTATION OUTLINE
SEEC activity-
The expanding universe
I borrowed the astronomy class to talk about the expansion of the universe
We made our own universes, with washers for galaxies and rubber bands for the vast expanses of space
WE THEN PICKED A “HOME” GALAXY AND TOOK SOME DATA
- How far each galaxy was from home
- How far each galaxy was from home after a “stretch”
- And the difference between those two numbers
- These helped us derive Hubble’s law!
I taught the lesson 3 times, so I got to improve each try
We had some trouble with math but we had a great discussion about red shift and the end of the universe
If I did this in my classroom I would make sure to include an assignment calculating Hubble’s constant
