• End tidal anesthetic gas concentration vs. Bispectral index
• 2000 patients, single center, prospective, randomized control trial
• Patients randomized into one of two protocols (ETAG or BIS)
• 2 patients from each group with Awareness, i.e. No Risk Reduction

RESEARCH

• BAG-RECALL trial, NEJM (2011;365:591-600)
• 6000 patient, multi-center, prospective, single-blinded, randomized
• ETAG vs BIS protocols in Higher Risk patients (ASA 3-4)
• Found 0.47% incidence of awareness overall (lower than expected)
• While both protocols appear to reduce risk of awareness, BIS not superior.

• PostOp Delirium:BAG-RECALL substudy, Anesth & Analg(2014:118;809-817)
• 310 Cardiothoracic surgery patients screened for post-op delirium
• Odds ratio of 0.6 favoring BIS group, P= 0.058
• Independent Predictors Identified
• --Low volatile anesthetic dose, transfusion, ASA status, EUROscore
