CH.3 GODS AND GODDESSES: VISHNU

VISHNU

  • Vishnu is the most worshiped god.
  • He is known as the "Preserver" because he protected eand visited earth, many times from danger.
  • Hindus believe he appeared in ten body forms, which are called "Avatars".
  • Vishnu had come as a tortoise, fish, boar and a half lion and human creature.

LOTUS, CONCH SHELL, MACE AND CHAKRA

  • Vishnu has been seen with four arms.
  • In the first hand vishnu is holing a lotus.
  • In the second hand vishnu is holding a conch shell.
  • In his third hand he has a mace.
  • In his fourth hand he is holding a chakra.

RESEMBLANCE

  • The lotus resembles purity.
  • The conch shell reminds worshipers to destroy ignorance and evil in life.
  • The mace represents when vishnu used it against enemies.
  • The chakra shows that it returns to Vishnu's hand when he struck an enemy.

VISHNU FORMS

  • Vishnu had returned to earth in a variety of forms.
  • The most important forms he appeared as are Rama and Krishna.
  • The story of Rama is told in the Ramayana. The Ramayana is one of several
  • Hindu sciptures, that appeared in 600 B.C. to 200 A.D.

THE STORY OF RAMA

  • This story centers or focuses around Rama rescuing his wife from the ten headed
  • demon.
  • This story teaches the life lesson that theaches that how good always overcomes
  • evil.

THE BHAGAVAD

  • Krishna is the hero of the Bhagavad Gita.
  • His friend "Arjuna" that seemingly is an endless cycle of birth, death and
  • rebirth.

KRISHNA

  • Krishna is usually depicted with sky blue skin.
  • His blue skin represents the sky that he's eternal and everywhere.
  • Krishna is usually playing a flute for the benefit of cows
  • and gopis.

GOD OF LOVE

  • Krishna is viewed as the "god of love."
  • Krishna has helped many people in different ways.
  • He had healed the deaf, the blind, the poor and raised people from the
  • grave.

VISHNU'S LAST APPEARANCE

  • Hindus believe that krishna will make one more appearance,
  • when the world comes to an end.

KALKI

  • He would be called kalki.
  • He would come on a white horse.
  • He will judge everyone if they were good or bad according to their deeds.
