Dear Supervisor,
I'm very ill with food poisoning and will not be able to make it to work tomorrow. I will email Jon to let him know as well. Hopefully I am on the mend now, but I will let you know if I will need to take any additional days off. If anything urgent arises, I should be available via email. Thank you for your understanding.
Regards,
Sick Employee

Problems

  • Should usually be able to give advance notice of absence
  • Give more details
  • Tie up loose ends if possible- notify co-workers as well as boss
  • Class- indicate you will stop by office hours to get missed classwork

Fred,
Why are you being so rude? I have done nothing wrong and do not appreciate your snarky remarks and rude stares. If you don't fix your behavior then I am going to report you to our boss.

Dear Supervisor,
I hope this email finds you well. I was hoping that we could find some time to meet next week. I'm concerned about my working relationship with Bill. I appreciate his feedback, but sometimes I get the sense that he is unhappy with my work (give ex.) and in these instances his feedback is not always as constructive as it could be. Is there something I should know about Bill's situation. Do you have any recommendations for me? I look forward to meeting with you to further discuss these topics. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
Regards,
Jordan

Problems

  • Trick Question: rather than re-write the email to annoying co-worker, instead, draft brief email to your supervisor, requesting in-person meeting to discuss situation

Dear NU Alum,
I will be graduating in May and I would like to do an informational interview with you because I think I could learn a lot from you and I may want to work at your company some day. Your office is located right near my gym. I work out Wed. 10am-12pm and would like to come over right before or after my workout- does that work for you? I'll call you tomorrow to find out.

Dear NU Alum,
I hope this email finds you well. I found your name through Husky Nation, NU's Alum Directory. I am currently a senior at NU, majoring in Political Science.I will be graduating in May. I have been reaching out to NU Alum, like you, to help with my career exploration process. I was hoping that you might have 15 minutes when I could meet with you to learn more about your career path and to seek your advice. I am attaching my resume so that you can have information on my academic and professional background. Please let me know if you have time to connect in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your time.
Regards,
NU senior

Dear Supervisor,
I completed the direct marketing research project that you requested. I am attaching it for your review. I am sorry that it took longer than I anticipated, I was not able to get into the office yesterday because of the snow, it will not happen again. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like me to make any revisions to the document. Thank you.
Regards,
Stellar Employee

Dear Professor Jones,
Can you please write me a recommendation for law school? I want to get my applications out before Thanksgiving, so if you are able to do it by that time I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Joe

Dear Professor Jones,
I hope this email finds you well. I really enjoyed your POLS 2201, Peace in the Middle East class, especially our discussion on civil rights. I was pleased to receive an "A" in your course and especially benefited from our conversations during your office hours. I am currently taking another course on civil rights and the foundation that I gained from your class has been very helpful. I am currently completing my law school applications. The schools require two letters of recommendation and I was hoping that you would be able to write one of them for me. I am enclosing my personal statement and resume so you have a stronger sense of my skills, interests and professional background. I am also happy to stop by your office hours to discuss in person. The school have a submission deadline of March 1, 2016. Please let me know if you are able to extend me this courtesy. Thank you in advance for your time.
Best Regards,
NU Student
