PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND RESPIRATION

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

  • The process of changing light energy
  • (From the sun or other light source to chemical energy)
  • This energy is stored as sugars (a carbohydrate)
  • Where does it happen?
  • In plants and some algae it also happens in the chloroplast of a cell

RESPIRATION

  • There are two types of respiration breathing and cell respiration
  • Cellular respiration is a chemical reaction
  • It happens in the mitochondria of all cells
  • It breaks down glucose into carbon dioxide, ATP and Water
  • It's also the reverse of photosynthesis

EQUATION

  • 6CO(2)+6H(2)O=C(6)H(12)O(6)+6O(2)
  • C(6)H(12)O(6)+6O(2)=6CO(2)+6H(2)O

Untitled Slide

  • Carbon dioxide: colorless odorless gas produced by burning organic compounds
  • Oxygen: gaseous element constituting about one-fifth of the volume of the atmosphere
  • Glucose: a sugar, Having several optically different forms.
  • Sunlight: the light of the sun, sunshine
  • Water: a tasteless liquid, compound of hydrogen and oxygen

Untitled Slide

  • ATP: an ester of adenosine and triphosphoric acid
  • Chloroplast: a pocket that has chlorophyll
  • Mitochondria: an organelle in the cytoplasm of cells that functions in energy production
  • Chlorophyll:matter of leaves and plants, essential to the carbohydrates by photosynthesis
  • Stomata: little slits in leafs lets in carbon and let's out oxygen

QUESTIONS!!!!

  • What's the opposite of photosynthesis?
  • Where does cellular respiration occur?
  • What are two types of respuration?
  • Where does photosynthesis occur?
  • What's the plants energy stored as?

ANSWERS

  • Respiration
  • It happens in the mitochondria
  • Breathing and cellular respiration
  • In the chloroplast or in plants
  • Sugar
