PROPERTIES OF ELEMENTS

GROUP 1

  • Alkali metals have low melting and boiling points compared to other metals.
  • They are very soft and can be cut with a knife.
  • They also have a low density and will(lithium, sodium and potassium will float on water)
  • They have on electron on the outer shell which is loosely bound.
  • They react readily with nonmetals, particularly halogens.

GROUP 2

  • Low densities
  • Low boiling points
  • Low melting points
  • lose two outermost electrons to form cations with a 2+ charge.
  • Ductile,Malleable

GROUPS 3-12

  • Form colored compounds
  • Good conductors of heat and electricity
  • Can be bent into shape
  • less reactive than alkali metals such as sodium
  • have high melting points-but Mercury is a liquid at room temperature

GROUPS 13-16

  • They have a poor reaction
  • Increase in atomic radius
  • Electrode potential increase
  • Ionization energy decreases
  • Only group that contain elements classified as metalloids

GROUP 17

  • Nonmetals
  • Boiling points increase
  • Highly electronegative
  • Highly reactive
  • can be harmful or lethal to biological organisms in sufficient quantities

GROUP 18

  • Odorless and colorless
  • Low chemical reactivity
  • Full valence shell
  • All conduct electricity
  • High solubility

LANTHANIDES AND ACTINIDES

  • Bright silvery appearance
  • Magnetic
