How my energy source is made or found?

  • In the 1800s, scientists learned how to use flowing water to spin the turbines of a generator.
  • The first hydroelectric power plant in the U.S. opened on the Fox River near Appleton, Wisconson.

Advantages

  • Once a dam is constructed electricity can be produced at a constant rate.
  • If electricity is not needed the sluice gates can be shut, stopping electricity generation.

Disadvantages

  • Dams are extremely expensive to build and must be built to a very high standard.
  • The high cost of dam construction means that they must operate for many decades to become profitable.

FACTS

  • In 2006, hydroelectricity supplied around 20% of the world's electricity
  • Hydro power has a new technology called the hydro engine.
  • Hydro power uses the energy of moving water for many applications.
  • The largest hydroelectric power station in the world is the Tree Gorges dam in China
