PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WAVES AND TIDAL ENERGY

BY:EMILIE

WHAT IS IT?

  • A power from the moon and suns gravitational pull
  • Height differences create tidal currents in coastal areas
  • The coastal currents from these height differences can be strong enough to make turbans move

WHERE IS IT USED

  • Tidal energy is new so there isn't many places where its used
  • Most of the places where is used is for experimental purpuses
  • La Rance tidal power station was the first large scale energy project
  • It opened in 1996 it is used in north western france
  • It has 24 turbans

TIDAL BARRAGE ENERGY

  • It consists of three main parts
  • Barrage holding water back during high tide
  • Sluice gate that lets water through the third part
  • The turban and generater resulting in electricity generation
  • Sluice gates are left open during high tide and closed during low tide

TIDAL STREAM GENERATOR

  • They are very similar to wind turnbans except they are under water
  • The turban generator coverts the movement of water from the change in tide
  • Kenetic energy into electricity
  • Water 830 times more dense than air so it generates electricity at lower speeds than air

DYNAMIC TIDAL POWER

  • It is still in a development stage
  • Theory is to exploit tidal flows
  • And the interaction between potential and kinetic energy

ADVANTAGES OF TIDAL ENERGY

  • Renewable and a green source
  • The density of water is 1000 times greater than air
  • Results in large amounts of energy
  • Predicable, easy for planning and maintenence

DRAWBACKS OF TIDAL POWER

  • Can only generate when..
  • The tide if flowing in or out.
  • Only 10 hours each day

PLANS FOR SEVERN BARRAGE

  • Every now and then it gets talked about
  • No one has built anything
  • It would cost at least £15 billion to build
  • Provide 8,000 megawatts thats over 12 nuclear power stations
  • Some say its only equivalent to 3 nuclear power stations

TIDAL ENERGY

  • Produced by the surge of ocean water
  • Renewable source
  • The amount of energy has been small so far
  • The united states has no tidal plants
  • United states has legal concers about underwater ownership

TIDAL LAGOON

  • Water inclosed by a natural barrier
  • You could fill it with water
  • Continues energy
  • Turbans would work when the lagoon is filling or emptying
