Background of First Source:
Fahimeh Keshmiri, author of The Disillusionment of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Dreams and Ideals in The Great Gatsby, is an educator of Literature studies. Her source discusses a literature analysis of the Great Gatsby while also mentioning, that many of the ideas in the novel reflect Fitzgerald’s experiences in life.

Fitzgerald’s feeling:
“This novel represents Fitzgerald's attempt to confront his conflicting feelings about the Jazz Age” (Fahimeh 1). The American Dream, aspects of love, even recklessness are all intertwined within the novel and reflect right back to Fitzgerald’s life, even to the point were he died of a heart attack, a not so elegant death.

Background of second source:
Paul Werner, main author of, Ethnicity, Music Experience, and Depression, discusses the correlation between music and the listener. It comes to the point where humans now determine a link with music and depression.

The Experiment:
Their study consisted of college students in the Bay Area (Werner 2). The main mission was to conduct an experiment that 1) correlates with presenting differences between ethnic groups, 2) compare music experiences with depression (Werner 11).

Results of the Experiment:
These results were not only about listening but also about performing music and learning music. “The White group was found to have a lower typical score than the African American, Asian American and Other groups” (Werner 20). These rank from depressed to most depressed.

Resonance:
The Great Gatsby deals with primarily white people. Many have such backstories as one fellow “who killed himself by jumping in front of a subway train” (Fitzgerald 63). Others have faced similar problems around drugs and alcohol, these of which lead or are the “reliefs” of depression. Even musicians in the novel saw this reality.

Continued Impact:
Music is so powerful that our personalities are impacted. Whatever songs we listen to are the keys to our personalities. With this, we unlock certain emotions and traits. Depression is not the result of music, it can be relief. The studies show how much passion one has with music is how much symptoms of depression they exhibit. We as students, can listen to anything as long as we’re careful the music does not overtake powerful emotions of anger or rebellion.
