SD Social Studies Standards

Purpose

• To provide students with the opportunity to be independent in making decisions. The standards were written to help students achieve educational goals in a developmentally appropriate and sequenced framework. Responsible citizenship found in Civics/Government standards. Spatial awareness found in Geography standards. Economic literacy found in Economic standards. Historical analysis found in History standards.

K-12 Standards

• The standards outlined are a guide for teachers when teaching Social Studies curriculum in their district. As student progress through the grades the standards require more advanced skills. Teachers may use any curriculum to meet the Geography, Civics, Economics, and History standards. Through the progression of the standards, graduates of South Dakota public schools will have the knowledge and skills which are essential to leading successful lives as they continue education or enter the workforce and assume their civic responsibilities.

• Through communication, inquiry, problem solving and critical thinking students will become responsible and informed citizens. At the end of their K-12 education they will be able to make responsible decisions that benefit their community, state, nation and world.
