Why we are STUDYING Gandhi

  • We are studying him because he was one of the main reasons India gained independence.

Ghandi's Younger Years

  • Mohandas Gandhi was born on October 2,1869, at Porbandar, on the western coast of India. His grandfather Uttamchand Gandhi and father Karamchand Gandhi occupied the high office of the diwan (Chief Minister) of Porbandar.

What Did He Want?

  • Gandhi wanted freedom for India from the British Empire.

What Did He Do To Achieve His Dream?

  • He fought the British with non-violent protests.

Did he succeed?

  • Yes he did!!! On June 15, 1947, the British House of Commons passed the Indian Independence Act, or Mountbatten Plan, which divided India into two dominions, India and Pakistan. It called for each dominion to be granted its independence by August 15 of that year.

  • When freedom was claimed for India, arguments broke out between the Hindus and the Muslims.

DId Gandhi Like This Conflict?

  • No. He was so upset that he went on hunger strikes and almost died several times.

Death

  • Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated at the Birla House in New Delhi on the 30th of January 1948. Gandhi was outside on the steps where a prayer meeting was going to take place, surrounded by a part of his family and some followers, when Nathuram Godse, a militant Hindu nationalist and prominent member of Hindu Mahasabha, approached and shot him three times in the chest at close range.
