In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

Purification by Jesus

  • He was motivated by His character Heb 1:1-3
  • He was made for this Rev 13:8
  • He came for this Is 53:4-5
  • He accomplished this Heb 1:3
  • He alone did the work Heb 1:3
Jesus

Spoke for the Father’s
Heir of all things
Creator of the world
Sustainer of the world
Protector of the plan
Actually God himself
Possesses powerful word

All of these descriptions are what is behind the desire to restore those who have been separated from him by sin, his people, to Himself,

Who he is leads to what he does – character determines action

He was made for this – lamb slain from the foundation of the world
as Rev 13:8 says in a conversation about those who turn their back on God by taking the mark of the beast.....8 "All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world."

He came for this - Is 53:4-6 tell us Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He accomplished this - the text reminds us this act of purification was something that took place in the past - a part of the world's historical record

He made.....emphasis on action, accomplishment......note the celebration of the Lord’s supper is not a re-enactment of the crucifixion but rather a celebration of its long lasting effects...

something that was done once for all.......a repeat sacrifice is not needed - as Rom 6:10 reminds us
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

and then Jesus sat down.....echos some of the last words of Jesus on the cross......It is finished

John 19John 19:28-30 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

He alone secured our salvation......(middle voice)

the Son’s work to provide purification from sin. In His work He deals not only with personal sins, but with cleansing all creation from sin itself. This is viewed as a once-for-all purification which is adequate and complete, a work in which the Son alone was involved. It was a work He accomplished “by Himself.”

He saw to our purification personally - did not delegate that to anyone....which indicates that the work of purification was done by Christ personally, and was not something which he caused to be done by some other agent. Purged, lit. having made purification.

Being Purified

  • Taking a bubble bath
  • Being washed
  • Being cleansed
  • Being stain free
  • Being innocent
The word group denotes physical, religious, and moral cleanness or purity in such senses as clean, free from stains or shame, and free from impurities - being squeaky clean like a baby after a bubble bath.....

Being washed - Restoration of cleanness is primarily by water (washing, sprinkling, or bathing)Vessels, too, are cleansed by water The most common act of cleansing is washing the hands

1 Cor 6:11 - And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Being cleansed leads to growth spiritually - and just the opposite is true 2 Peter 1:5-9 - 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

Being stain free

Being innocent - or free from guilt, the deserving punishment that awaits those who sin

Psalm 103:12 New International Version (NIV) as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

SIN

Sin - (Hamartanw) - sin in the most comprehensive sense. In the NT it tends to denote offenses against God and emphasizes the guilt which follows, though it can refer to the abstract concept of sinfulness (John 8:21) and sin as a power in and of itself (Rom 5:12).

Actions that lead to guilt – the idea that you are now responsible for some sort of payment, punishment, or restitution because of your actions, now in a state of estrangement from God

Condition of being stained, dirty defiled

Eph. 2:12-13 - sums up our situation without a remedy for sin.....

12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

So....

  • Turn to Jesus.....and
  • Build your character
  • Enjoy a real bubble bath
  • Share the aroma of "life"
  • Thank him for your cleansing
Turn to Jesus - he is the source of cleansing

build your character - a present tense defense against sin 2 Peter 1 reminds us especially verse 9

Share the aroma of life - You "smell heavenly" 2 Cor 2:14-15

the truth of the empty tomb - nothing left but the sweet smell fo the spices used to prepare Jesus body.....

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
