Sharing amounts in ratios.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SHARING AMOUNTS IN RATIOS

9TH NOV 2021

COMPLETE THE STARTER TASK IN BOOKLET

  • If done, attempt this question.
  • Jack and Mary have 220 apples. They share this in a ratio of 6:5. How many more apples does Jack have?

Essentially, for sharing ratios, it can be thought of as a fraction. e.g: 5:6 is equal to 5/11 + 6/11. (Explanation on board)

SHARING IN n:1 OR 1:n

  • With sharing in 1:n form, e.g 4:9, you would divide both numbers by whichever you need to in order to get 1 on one side and n on the other.

QUESTIONS

  • Share £568 into the ratio of 4:2
  • Find what the ratio 8:4 would be in terms of 1:n
  • Rex and Debbie went sweet shopping and share 430 sweets in ratio of 5:3. How many more sweets does Rex get?
  • Define a ratio using the word, ‘proportion’ in your definition and explain how ratios are useful for a mathematician.
