Mexican War of Independence was the start of Mexico. Spain accepted Mexican independence and next was the Mexican--American War. Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836. This war caused political turmoil and helped the Caudillo Antonio Lopez Santa Ana consolidate his rule. This war caused many more outcomes later. The Mexican Revolution was conflict to overthrow dictator Porfirio Diaz. The government regained control afterwards.

  • Went from Monarchy, to republic, to Caudillo Rule
  • Generated a Liberal Reform Movement
  • Juan Manuel de Rosas centralized the gov. he usurped
  • Monarchy was ruled by Agustin and Maximillian
  • Monarchy was soon replaced by 1st Republic of Mexico

LA REFORMA

  • Ideals set forth by Constitution of 1857
  • Restricted prerogatives of priests and military elites
  • Allowed confiscation of church properties
  • Challenged fundamental conservatism of Mexican elites
  • By early 20th century, Mexico was a divided land

  • Attempted to reshape Mexican society
  • Led by President Benito Juarez, La Reforma was created
  • Aimed to limit power of military and Roman Catholic Church
  • Juarez called for "tierra y libertad" (land and liberty)
  • Endowed Mexicans to make a living and participate in political affairs
