INTRODUCTION

  • The Underground Railroad began in the first half of the 19th century.
  • It got its name because its actions were to be carried out in secret.
  • It's goal was to help slaves reach the north where they would be free.

PEOPLE

  • The Underground Railroad was a network of people working together with the same goal in mind.
  • If someone was caught helping a slave they would be forced to go to jail or pay a fine.
  • Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, John Fairfield, and Fredrick Douglass were famous for risking their lives to help slaves.

REASONS

  • Slaves wanted to run away because of the horrible working conditions they were faced with.
  • They ran away to prevent being separated from family and friends.
  • They hoped for a better future in the north.

RESULTS

  • The Underground Railroad was very successful.
  • Around 10,000-40,000 slaves gained freedom.
  • Not all slaves made it to freedom because they were either captured or killed during the journey.
