WHAT IS JESUS TELLING US ABOUT GOD?

In the first section of the Lord's Prayer, Jesus tells us to acknowledge something very specific to God.

HE IS OUR FATHER

JUST LIKE HE IS JESUS' FATHER,
The first is that He is our Father. Talk about how this can have two meanings, first that God created all of us and is our father and second that when we become Christians we are called "children of God" (John 1). We now share a relationship with God like Jesus does. This should be especially prominent when we pray to God.

HE IS HOLY

The second aspect about God that Jesus tells us about is God's holiness. This can be a difficult concept for us to grasp which is why we will be thinking about metaphors. However, it is important that we acknowledge God's holiness when we pray to Him and before anything else we pray about.

WHAT IS JESUS TELLING US ABOUT PRAYER?

WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?
What Jesus tells us about God is important for our relationship with Him, but it is also important for our prayer. Based on what we just talked about, have the students try to apply what we've learned about God to prayer.

WE NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIS HOLINESS

WE HAVE A FATHER IN HEAVEN AND
This can be powerful combination.
Model : Explain to students that one of the appropriate responses to knowing this most definitely trust, but also reverence. He is our Father and he loves us, but he is powerful beyond anything we can imagine.

HOW CAN WE THINK ABOUT HOLINESS?

  • With your partner, think up metaphors that represent holiness
  • After you name a few, write them in your journal
  • Once everyone has a few, we will share in our group
  • Next, break off by yourself and take 5 minutes to practice
  • Ask God to help you understand and pray His holiness
Practice and check for understanding:
Because thinking about God's holiness can be difficult to internalize, it can be helpful to think of things to relate it to. For example, I often think of the ocean, it is beautiful and refreshing and one of my favorite places to be, but we also know the kind of power the ocean has, tsunamis and hurricanes. Have students come up with their own metaphors in groups and in their journals. Closure: Before breaking off to prayer, have students write one sentence in their journals summarizing what was discussed.
