NEUTRAL COUNTRIES

IN THE BEGINNING NEUTRAL

  • America was neutral due to the Neutrality Acts
  • It didn't want to get involved in a costly war
  • America was a good distance from the actual war
  • Had relations with many places in Europe such as Germany

REASONS FOR GETTING INVOLVED

  • German U-boats were sink passenger ships
  • Some of the ships were American ships
  • Zimmerman Telegraph incident
  • (Germany promised American land to Mexico if it joined the war)

AMERICANS WERE EFFECTED BY:

  • rationing supplies and food
  • Propaganda used for political support (calling it the Great War)
  • Overseas fighting (leading to deaths and mental illnesses)
  • It was the "War to end all wars"
  • economic affect (gov spending money for war- Econ up)

RATIONING DUE TO PROPAGANDA

  • FOOD (WHEATLESS WEDNESDAYS AND MEATLESS MONDAYS)
  • GAS (SO THAT THE TANKS, AIRPLANES, AND SHIPS WOULD HAVE ENOUGH)
  • Had a committed on public opinion= tried to keep the public for the war
  • George Creel ="Do your bit for the war"
  • The committee Organized the propaganda and came up with slogans

JOBS CHANGED

  • Women took over jobs of men since a lot of men went overseas
  • Mexican immigrants came over to help with crops (mainly in CA)
  • African Americans moved north for new jobs and escape poverty
  • Women worked as nurses overseas in war zones
  • African Americas had separate military quadrants in the war

PROPAGANDA PUSHED MANY WOMEN INTO WAR TIME JOBS

  • found in Vera Brittain's brilliant book of memoirs Testament of Youth (1933)
  • Her stories talk about the grueling work, and terrible working conditions
  • The girls lived in cold rooms (if there were rooms available)
  • Vera joined the group out of sympathy for her fiancé when he was drafted
  • Also said the girls were under constant suspicion of possibly being spies

FIGHTING IN THE WAR...

  • Americans were effected by the weaponry used:
  • Guns, airplanes, gas, blimps, tanks, ships, and U-boats, long range artillery
  • December 7, 1917 is when America officially entered the war
  • Trench warfare was used
  • In between trenches was a place called no man's land

TRENCH WARFARE

ARTHUR EMPEY

  • He is an American from New Jersey
  • Was upset when America didn't immediately join the war
  • Left America to join British standing army (technically illegal)
  • Was in trench warfare and had gas bombs dropped on his group
  • "I couldn't get the mask on fast enough to stop the burning"

ARTHUR EMPEY

  • He passed out but was rescued
  • After he gained consciousness he helped burry friends
  • Friends in no man's land were not buried
  • "When it comes to no man's land friend and foe are treated alike"
  • Was in hospital for 3 months

CASUALTIES

  • America suffered less far less than other countries
  • The fighting was in the other countries so they had more death
  • America was relatively separated from the war
  • America had an easier time after the war because no reconstruction
  • Russia lost the most people

CASUALTIES

  • America= 350,000
  • Russia= 9.15 million
  • Germany= 7.1 million
  • Total allies= 22 million
  • Total central= 15 million

PERSONAL EFFECTS

THINGS THAT EFFECTED MOST (IF NOT ALL) CITIZENS

  • Selective Service Act (1917)= the draft
  • 2.8 million draftees drafter, 2.9 million volunteers
  • 2 million sent to Europe
  • African Americans participated in Europe
  • (Very few were officers)

WARTIME CIVIL LIBERTIES

  • Civil liberties were challenged during war
  • Espionage and Sedition Acts=
  • imprison people who are disloyal or abusive to war effort
  • Schenck vs United States (1919)=
  • limited free speech because of a "have a clear and present danger"
