Maritime Museum Excursion Assignment

This presentation was created to display an excursion to the Maritime Museum that is being used for a Primary HSIE assignment. The excursion was planned and practiced by a group of 6 university students from Western Sydney University.

Museum Information

  • Opening hours 9.30am - 5.00pm
  • School Bookings: Amelia Bowan - bookings@anmm.gov.au
  • Bus charter: Veolia = $600
  • Travel time: 45 mins to 1 hour
  • Cost: for students = $30.20 for teachers = $18.20

Planning For The Excursion

  • What to wear: flat enclosed shoes. Children's hats and backpacks will be placed in lockers.
  • What to bring: Student worksheets/excursion packs. OHS plan and First Aid kit. School Visit Induction attended by everyone.

Please Note

  • Resources: Access https://storify.com/ANMMedu/teacher-site-tour before excursion to familiarise yourself with the museum.
  • Accessibility: Navigators exhibit is wheelchair accessible. Endeavour is not, but students can take an alternate Virtual Reality tour for $2. Therefore, their excursion cost is $27.20.

  • 1770 first ship to reach east coast of Australia (discovery of Australia)

Cross Curriculum Priority

  • Melbourne Declaration: 'Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander histories and cultures' is a Cross Curriculum Priority that needs to be addressed in order to benefit students (ACARA, 2016)
  • Learning about Captain Cook's voyage on the HMB Endeavour, his first contact with the Aboriginal and the impacts (BOSTES, 2013)

  • Exploring how Captain Cook's belonging to the Guugu Yimithirr community influenced his perceptions of them (Australia Curriculum, 2014).

GOASA: Gathering

  • Students will watch a video on the HMB Endeavour to develop their knowledge and gather information on experiences.
  • Students are broken up into groups and given a person to gather information.
  • Students gather information at the excursion from the tour guide.

GOASA: Organising

  • Students in groups, brainstorm ideas of how people lived at the time, drawing a mind map on butchers paper.
  • During the excursion, students will take photos of the HMB Endeavour and answer questions based on QR codes.

GOASA: Analyse

  • Students report their findings from the group work and the excursion.
  • Students will use google maps to find the locations Captain Cook sailed to while on the HMB Endeavour.

GOASA: Synthesise

  • Students create a map of the ship and try to locate items they have photographed on the excursion map.

GOASA: Apply

  • Students will create an online reflection on the individual they chose for their Puppet Pals presentation. They will be uploaded to the class blog.

Teaching Objects

Pre-excursion Lessons

  • Two lessons will be held a week before the excursion to inform students of the excursion.
  • These lesson will highlight the people that travelled on the HMB Endeavour.

Classes will view the video from Behind The News

Classes will be shown a map that displays where the Endeavour travelled.

Pre-excursion Lessons

  • Classes will be split into 5 different groups. These groups will use classroom laptops to study a significant person or group of people that travelled on the HMB Endeavour.
  • Students will create mind maps that present the information they gather.
  • Students will then present their mind maps to the rest of the class.

On-site Learning Experience

On-site Learning Experience

  • A hunt (Knowledge Hunt)
  • Resources needed: worksheets/excursion packs, iPads and pencils.

On-site Learning Experience

  • Plan/details: The students will be led around the different sections of the ship during the guide to take different photos. The worksheets can be completed during the tour or when the iPads are handed out during designated times. The children will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore the ship.

Post-site Learning Experience

  • A journal entry (Animated journal)
  • Resources needed: iPads, Puppet Pals 2 (application), excursion pictures and activity sheets.
