The author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804. His life was influenced in the Puritan legacy. In 1630 an early ancestor, William Hathorne emigrated from England to American and later became a judge. He was known for harsh sentencing and Nathaniel was ashamed of his family. Which made Nathaniel later on add a "w" to him a last name to distance himself from his family and not be a part of their harsh sentencing.

What are some ways evil changes a person's personality?

My essential question is "what are some way evil changes a person?".

Robins in the article questions "Do people know how their personality has changed?". He states that there is a difference in people knowing they have changed and actual change. Richard tested college student and examined how they changed over time from when they started and ended college. This information pertains to my essential question everyone throughout the book and many of them are changing in a bad way. They are becoming evil or are involved with evil. Like Robin experimented people change over time they may not be aware of that. There is a difference in thinking you changed and actual change. For example, Dimmesdale he has defiantly changed in a bad way. He is this high priest he is suppose to be a good example for his people and he had a baby with Hester and now that he is sick Chillingworth think something bad has to do something with his sickness.

"Participants tended to view themselves as having changed substantially, and perceptions of change showed some correspondence with actual personality change."

A quotes from the source by Richard Robins "Participants tend to view themselves as having changed substantially, and perceptions of change showed some correspondence with actual change."
