The Domino Effect

  • The domino theory was the reason for entering the Vietnam War. The domino theory stated if one new country turned communist in Asia, then it would begin a chain reaction that would cause more Southeast Asian countries to become communist.

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

  • Tonkin Resolution was a declaration of war enabling President Johnson to commit several hundred thousand American troops to South Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh Trail

  • The Ho Chi Minh Trail were roads built from North Vietnam to South Vietnam through the close countries, Laos and Cambodia, to provide support to the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese Army during the war.

Hawks and Doves

  • War hawks were the opposite of doves. The terms are from analogy of the birds nature and history. Hawks are predators that attack and eat other animals, and doves mostly eat seeds and fruit and are historically a symbol of peace.

The Tet Offensive

  • The Tet Offensive was a series of North Vietnamese attacks, on more than 100 cities in south Vietnam. The attack was an attempt to provoke rebellion among the South Vietnamese people and encourage the United States to retreat back its involvement in the Vietnam War.

Vietnamization

  • the US policy of withdrawing its troops, and transferring the responsibility of the war effort to the government of South Vietnam.

Kent State Shootings

  • The Kent State shootings, were the shootings on May 4, 1970, of innocent college students by the Ohio National Guard, at Kent State University in Ohio, during a mass protest against the bombing in neutral Cambodia by United States military forces.

Legacy of the Vietnam War

  • Even more than three decades after the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese people still continue to live with the consequences of Agent Orange, (a chemical that has symbolized the unintended consequences of warfare.)

The my lai massacre

  • Was the killing of Vietnamese villagers by American soldiers, in the coastal province Quang Ngai.

Australians involvement

  • The Australian government gave troops to the Vietnam War in 1965. Australia was involved in the war, because of the fear of communist expansion in Asia, and they wanted to align with the United States
