ELL Strategy: Communication Games
- Identify a language need
- Model the game
- Organize the pairs/groups
- Guide the practice
- Reflect about the experience
- Assess the students' abilities to communicate orally
- (Herrell & Jordan, 2015, p. 151)
For this ELL strategy, a teacher will need to follow these steps to successfully implement this strategy into their classroom. First, a teacher will need to identify the skill that they want their students to practice. Second, demonstrate the game and review the rules for all students. Third, organize the class into pairs or groups. Fourth, provide additional support for students by moving around the classroom. Fifth, at the conclusion of the game, have students reflect about the experience. And finally, make sure you take the time to assess how the students are doing with the activity and provide additional support as needed.
