MARLOW AND THE COMPANY

  • The Company sent a group of people along with Marlow to Africa
  • Company's objective was to retrieve ivory and extract Kurtz
  • Marlow witnessed the brutal treatments
  • Two perspective regarding kurtz
  • Marlow knows the reality of colonization. Quote
"The conquest of the earth, which mostly means the taking away from those who have a different complex action or slightly flatter noses than ourselves, is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much"

Two perspectives
The manager mentions that he believes Kurtz has gone insane and out of control. He fears KURTZ'S power over the natives. his power might challenge their influence on the natives (company)

The natives believe that Kurtz is an impressive person and very passionate, civilizing the natives. He is a musician and a painter

Harlequin's mind has been enlarged by Kurtz

KURTZ AND THE NATIVES

  • Kurtz is a god to the natives
  • He is brutal and savage and is witnessed by Marlow
  • He has gone insane and powerful
  • Natives worship Kurtz
  • He became obsessed with the ivories
His initial goal was to colonize the natives. He believed that company station " should be like a beacon on the road toward better, a center for trade of course but also for humanizing, improving, instructing."

Kurtz spent too much time in Congo.
He challenges any natives who gets in his way. He is violent
Places heads of rebels on top of the poles uses it as decoration of his house

KURTZ'S IMPACT AND CHANGES

  • Congo
  • Truth about reality and darkness
  • Too much power equals to corruption
  • His savagery potential
  • Hunger for ivory and power
Kurtz built his own world in Congo
His perspective regarding life changed

Colonization is taking advantage of the natives it is for profit and their resources it is definitely not to civilize natives

Kurtz has seen his savagery and he has accepted. He is the character that fully embraces the darkness. It made him insane

He became violent and brutal and gains power from the native since he comes from a world where technology is so advanced the natives worship him like a god and he take advantage of the power he gains to collect ivories

He gained this ultimate freedom and power and this corrupted his initial plans he had which was to civilize them

BEFORE KURTZ'S DEATH

  • Kurtz was very ill
  • Talks to Marlow about his plans to civilize the natives
  • He gave Marlow his records which included a picture of his fiancé
  • Note says his plan to exterminate the brutes
  • Left Marlow these last words, "the horror, the horror."
Initial plan was to civilize the natives then it was to exterminate the brutes

His stay in Congo changed him

He was a man with a positive goal but then went rogue and disturbed. Corrupted with totally different view on colonization

"THE HORROR. THE HORROR"

  • Life review
  • Colonialism=Darkness
  • Human nature
  • Regret
  • Fear
Final review of his life and he sees only darkness

Colonialism is a ruling power. Ill treatment of its subjects of the natives. It is brutal and dehumanizing. they say they want to civilize the natives but that's a disguise they put on. A pretense. It is for profit and resources and Marlow saw this from the beginning

Power equals to corruption equals to darkness. This is Kurtz situation

Horror is the darkness of human nature. Colonization corruption which results in violence and deaths. People are capable of being dark and is seen through

It could also be the unknown the company taking over the natives bring in their unknown technologies and strategies and goalsupon the natives. This unknown is feared and is seen as a threat to the natives.

His regret did not civilize the native. Plan was changed

His fear in all of it his guilt, did not accomplish
his plan. His own darkness. Colonization

His power and freedom made him insane and corrupted this shows what is going to happen if the company has the power what they will do with. How is the end going to look like?
