R.J Palacio is an American author and graphic designer . She was born in a family of immigrants from Columbia , she is an author of many novels for teenagers, including the best-selling Wonder, which was later filmed (the movie wonder was released in 2017). She now lives in New York City with her husband and her two sons.

The setting
The Pullman family lives in a town house in present Upper Manhattan in New York City. Auggie’s middle school, Beecher Prep, is within walking the distance from home.

August Pullman
Auggie is just about to start fifth grade and it is his first time at a regular school because his mother has always home-schooled him. At first, Auggie resists the idea of going to a real school; his Dad sides with him, worried that Auggie is not ready to be sent off to school.

Julian Albans
Julian dislikes Auggie and convinces the other students that if they touch him, they will develop "The Plague." He bullied Auggie and told most of the grade to isolate him, and Jack Will for becoming friends with Auggie.

Summer Dawson
One of Auggie's first and best friends. She sits next to him at lunch on the first day of school when no one else would. She doesn't care what the other students think of Auggie and is always very kind to him.

Introduction
Ten year-old August Pullman doesn't look like the rest of us. He was born with a craniofacial abnormality so radical that his face causes the first person who ever sees him to faint; elicits audible noises of surprise from people; makes kids on the playground scream and run away; and, well, looks like it could be a Halloween mask.

RISING ACTION

  • His parents tell him about a public school
  • He takes a tour of the school
  • He makes some friends
  • He decides to and up go to school
  • He’s made 1 new friend

Climax
The climax of this book is the part when August finds out that Jack Will really is not his friend. August was involved because he was there listening to there conversation without anyone even knowing. It hurt August a bunch.

Falling action
Auggie has simply been himself—a really nice person—all year long. He is patient and long-suffering in the face of rejection, understanding about how hard it must be for others to tolerate his appearance. He cracks jokes at his own expense all the time, and he always gives people the benefit of the doubt and a second chance

Resolution
The resolution was when it was graduation time and auggie received the Henry Ward Beecher
Award for kindness.

THEME

  • Never judge anyone by their appearance
  • It’s not your circumstances that determine your happiness, but your outlook attitude
  • To be brave, stand up for yourself, and not give in to bullying because it’s never okay.

Critique
This book is a really good book because this book is a little heartbreaking when auggie is bullied and they just stare at him and make fun of him because of his appearance.
