MISSIONS FROM 1967 - 1968

  • April 23, 1967 - Soviet Soyuz 1 is launched, carrying Vladimir M. Komarov. On April 24 it crashed, killing Komarov, the first spaceflight fatality.
  • October 18, 1967 - Venera 4 sends a descent capsule into the Venusian atmosphere, returning data about its composition.
  • September 15, 1968 - Soviet Zond 5 is launched, the first spacecraft to orbit the Moon and return.
  • October 11, 1968 - Apollo 7 is the first manned Apollo mission with Walter M. Schirra, Jr., Donn F. Eisele, and Walter Cunningham. It orbited the earth once.
  • December 21, 1968 - Apollo 8 is launched with Frank Borman, James A. Lovell, Jr. and William A. Anders, the first Apollo to use the Saturn V rocket, and the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon, making 10 orbits on its 6-day mission.

  • Launched and reached space on April 23rd 1967
  • Rocket failed and fell to the earth, burning up and killing Vladimir Komarov, the first space fatality ever

OCTOBER 18TH, 1967

  • October 18, 1967 - Venera 4 sends a descent capsule into the Venusian atmosphere, returning data about its composition.
  • The goal was to gather information about the atmosphere of Venus
  • First successful probe to gather information on the Atmosphere of another planet

  • Soviet Zond 5 is launched, the first spacecraft to orbit the Moon and return.
  • Second spacecraft to orbit the moon, first to return home safely.
  • Unmanned but biologically occupied by a mannequin
  • Goal was to collect more information and orbit the moon

  • On September 18th, 1968 The spacecraft reached the orbit of the moon and flew around it

  • October 11, 1968 - Apollo 7 is the first manned Apollo mission with Walter M. Schirra, Jr., Donn F. Eisele, and Walter Cunningham. It orbited the earth 163 times.
  • Goal was to demonstrate command and service module, crew performance and mission support facilities performance

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS/MILESTONES

  • Launched at 11:02 am on October 11th, 1968 in Florida
  • Spent more time than all the Soviet spacecrafts combined in space up till that point
  • 10 days and 20 hours is how,long the total mission lasted

DECEMBER 21ST, 1968

  • December 21, 1968 - Apollo 8 is launched with Frank Borman, James A. Lovell, Jr. and William A. Anders, the first Apollo to use the Saturn V rocket, and the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon, making 10 orbits on its 6-day mission.
  • Goal for Apollo 8 included a coordinated performance of the crew, the command and service module, or CSM, and the support facilities. The mission also was to demonstrate translunar injection; CSM navigation, communications and midcourse corrections; consumable assessment; and passive thermal control.
