WHAT IS CHESS-BOXING?

  • Considered a hybrid sport
  • Combines two traditional fighting sports
  • Uses both physical and mental power
  • Is played by two people who alternate rounds of boxing and chess

ORIGINS

  • Invented by a Dutch man named Iepe Rubingh in
  • Lepe came up with the idea from a comic strip in 1992 in which the outcome of a boxing match was portrayed as a chess game
  • However, the first official chess boxing competition was in 2003 and was won by Lepe

LAYOUT OF THE GAME

  • One can either win through a knockout or a checkmate
  • Typically matched with someone that is the same weight as you and has the same amount of chess experience

RULES OF CHESSBOXING

  • Touch rule is in effect (chess)
  • No stalling; you can think but if it's obvious you're stalling then the chess official can end your turn
  • When speaking to the chess arbiter, one must take our their headphones to stop the clock
