Puberty

For a girl puberty usually starts around 11, but can start much earlier

A girl is born...

  • with all reproductive organs in place.
  • She has hundreds of thousands of eggs that will be in her ovaries until puberty.
  • When she reaches puberty the female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone) will stimulate many changes.

Some of these changes include:

  • breasts begin to grow
  • body shape changes
  • ovulation begins
  • After the first ovulation is when menstration (period) starts
  • One is capable of becoming pregnant after this point if they chose to have sex.

Female Reproductive System

  • Labia
  • Clitoris
  • Urethra
  • Vagina
  • Uterus
  • Fallopian Tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Cervix

Functions

  • Labia: Encloses and protects the other sex organs
  • Clitoris: A small sensitive protrusion that is comparable to the penis in males in that it can become erect.
  • Urethra: tube that carries urine to the bladder
  • Vagina: The canal that joins the cervix to the outside of the body.

Functions

  • Uterus: Hollow pear shaped, holds a fetus.
  • Fallopian Tubes: Tunnel for eggs from ovaries to the uterus
  • Ovaries: Produce eggs and hormones
  • Cervix: Connects the vagina to the uterus
