Conversation around Discrimination

Setting:
Town in the South, 1960’s
Students do some research on their location, and create a bulletin board with a town, some roads, some major places, and design each of their houses based on their characters and role.

Character: Discrimination
Students with blue/grey eyes are privileged
Students with brown/green eyes are discriminated
Privileged students are for/against civil rights
Discriminated students are nonviolent (MLK) or violent (Malcolm X) in opposition

Character: Discrimination
Segregated seating and water fountain use
Only privileged students get positions of leadership
Discriminated students can only do menial jobs
Mayor and Judge elected by the privileged from among the privileged

Character: Design
Using Facebook Profile framework and research from articles based on assignment, students develop their characters and those characters' roles in the town. These profiles build the TOWN HALL Bulletin Board

Events

Event 1: A Fight in the Street
Three characters got in a fight. Judge presiding and witnesses/jury present, try to figure out who is at fault.

Event 2: A Protest
Characters from one group decide to have a protest in front of the town hall. Mayor and Judge presiding, town hall tries to figure out how to deal with the situation.

Event 3: Arson
Three houses in the town have fire glued on, and the town hall meets, with Mayor and Judge presiding, to try to figure out who the arson was.

Culminating Event: Murder
Someone in town has been murdered, and the town hall meets, with Mayor and Judge presiding, to try to figure out who the murderer was.
