THE ORIGIN

  • The Cold War began after WWII, when the Soviets violated the treaty with US
  • The name came fromWalter Lippman, he said no actual combat would happen
  • The US sought to fight for the democracy for the puppet countries
  • The Soviets and the US built up arms
  • The idea went from appeasement to containment

CAPITALISM VS. COMMUNISM

  • Capitalism: free press; Communism: gov. owns the press
  • Capitalism: food and health care if you can pay; Communism: equal distribution
  • Capitalism: free press; Communism: gov. own press
  • Capitalism: individual property; Communism: equal distribution
  • Capitalism: invest in anything; Communism: same rewards

The Soviets saw the Containment as an aggressive move against the USSR by America. They were furious, and built the Berlin Wall, and began developing their nuclear weapons after seeing the destruction in Japan.

The Kitchen debate took place in an American exhibition in Moscow, in a fake house in the kitchen. It illustrated the core ideals of Capitalism and Communism. Capitalists were consumed by luxury and the Communists claimed they only needed things they had actual use for.
