GEORGE GERSHWIN

SEPTEMBER 26 1898 - JULY 11 1937

CHILDHOOD

  • George was born in Brooklyn New York.
  • Began his career as a song plugger.
  • Studied the piano under Charles hambitzer.
  • Intended to study with Nadia Boulanger except she refused because she wanted to be his own “George Gershwin”.
  • Sibling included: Ira Gershwin Arthur Gershwin and Frances Gershwin.

Dropped out of school at age fifteen, and never did go to college.


At age fifteen decided to purse his dreams of becoming a Composer, consequently wanted to work for Nadia Boulanger.

ANCESTORS (DAD)

  • Gershwin was of a Jewish ancestry. His father Jacov Gershowitz was from Odesa, Ukraine.
  • Served as a mechanic in the Russian imperial army to earn his right of free travel and residence. Finally then retiring near Saint Petersburg.

ANCESTORS (MOM)

  • Born in Saint Petersburg.
  • Was very nervous ambitious and purposeful.
  • Wanted George to be a teacher not a piano player.
  • After her husband’s death dined out nearly every night.

MOVING TO HOLLYWOOD

  • In 1937, after many successes on Broadway, the brothers decided go to Hollywood. Again they teamed up with Fred Astaire, who was now paired with Ginger Rogers. They made the musical film, “Shall We Dance”, which included such hits as “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

THE RISE OF HIS CAREER

  • In 1919 he scored his first big national hit with his song "Swanee", with words by Irving Caesar. Al Jolson, a Broadway star and former minstrel singer, heard Gershwin perform "Swanee" at a party and decided to sing it in one of his shows.

ILLNESS AND DEATH

  • Started to complain about headaches and migraines
  • Then started to complain about Nausea and dizziness
  • Finally despite 4 hours of procedure he died from the brain tumor.

FUN FACTS

  • Was a great painter and inspired by many others
  • Loved playing tennis against his family and his friends.
  • Never got married said he was to busy
  • Never went to college for music instead had a private tutor for him.
