EROSION

THE CARRYING AWAY OF SEDIMENTS BY ANY NATURAL FORCE

Example of Erosion By Gravity

Gravity pulls down material and causes it to fall

Erosion when vegetation is removed from a hillside

The vegetation keeps the soil together when removed the soil is able to fall

Minnehaha falls

This waterfall carries material down it River

Erosion by moving water

Water tears apart the rocks and carries the down a river and can carve a canyon

Erosion by wind

The wind carries certain rocks away and leaves others behind and you are left with arches

Erosion by glaciers

Glaciers grind down the rock and carry it away

Mechanical Weathering

Breaking down a material without changing its chemical composition

Example of mechanical weathering

Plants roots break into rocks and go deeper into the rock and break apart the rock

Another example of mechanical weathering

When pressure is released in some rocks they break apart

Chemical weathering

The process of rocks breaking down due to chemical reactions

EXAMPLE OF CHEMICAL WEATHERING

OXIDIZATION CREATES RUST ON ROCKS AND BREAKS THEM DOWN

ANOTHER EXAMPLE

THIS IS LICHENS BREAKING DOWN ROCKS

Cliffs of Lake Superior

This shows weathering because the waves hit against the rock and break it apart
