GREAT DANES

HISTORY

• developed by the germans in 16th Century.
• referred to as an 'englische dogge' at the time.
• Also referred to as 'Boar Hounds' because great danes
• Were bred as hunting dogs meant to go after wild boars.
• Origins - Irish wolfhounds and old english mastiffs.

• Officially recognized as a breed by the akc
• In 1887, but Great Danes have actually been around
• For Over 400 Years. Kingdom - animalia
• phylum - chordata; class - mammalia; order - carnivora
• family - canidae; Genus - canis familiaris.

TEMPERMENT

• Friendly, patient, dependable
• Medium energy and large size
• Moderate and daily exercise is necessary
• But because Great Danes are such large dogs,
• Its important that they partake in very little

• Giving Great Danes yet another nickname -
• The 'heartbreak breed'.

• Lives 8-10 years
• Minimum weight for male - 120 lbs
• Minimum weight for female - 100 lbs
• Minimum height for male- 30 in
• Minimum height for female - 28 in

• Great Danes, of course, rely on dog food for nutrition
• Coat - black, white, black and white, blue, brindle,
• Fawn, harlequin, mantle, and merle.
• Markings - black mask (nose/mouth) and black or white markings
