Heteronormativity asserts that heterosexuality is the only sexual orientation or only norm, and is often linked to heterosexism and homophobia. It is a viewpoint that expresses heterosexuality as a given instead of being one of many possibilities, and that involves alignment of biological sex, sexuality, gender identity and gender roles. Examples of heteronormative assumptions are that a boy will grow up to marry a woman, or that a girl will grow up to marry a boy. Examples of heteronormativity in the media are children’s books and TV shows only portraying heterosexuality and the assuming that every character is heterosexual.
