(ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER)

WHAT IS ADHD

  • Stands for (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • One of the most common childhood disorders
  • Can continue through adulthood
  • Usually changes to ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)
  • ADHD has three different subtypes

PREDOMINANTLY HYPERACTIVE-IMPULSIVE

  • Most symptoms are hyper-impulsive (six or more)
  • Symptoms of inattention may still be present
  • (Fewer than six symptoms are present)
  • Inattention may be very slight

PREDOMINANTLY INATTENTIVE

  • Most symptoms are inattention (six or more)
  • Hyperactivity-impulsive may still be present
  • (Fewer than six symptoms)
  • Kids have fewer problems getting along with others
  • They do usually sit quietly but are not paying attention to what they are doing

COMBINED HYPER AND INATTENTIVE

  • Six symptoms for hyperactive-impulsive
  • Six symptoms for inattentive
  • Most children have this type

CAUSES

  • Hereditary
  • Smoking while pregnant

MEDICATION FOR ADHD

  • Use stimulants
  • Help patients be calmer and have better impulse control
  • Medications sometimes have side effects

SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICATION

  • Decreased appetite
  • Sleep problems
  • Headaches
  • Jitteriness
  • Side effects are minor and usually stop after continuous use
