WWI

TRENCH WARFARE

  • WWI was fought between the industrial powers of the world at the time.
  • The new advanced war technology was too much for the old war strategies.
  • One side would charge towards an opposing side.
  • The opposing side, in the safety of their trenches, would fire at charging enemies.
  • This resulted in slaughter.

UNRESTRICTED SUBMARINE WARFARE

  • Unrestricted submarine warfare uses submarines to sink all forms of enemy ships.
  • Germany used this to control the seas in times of war.
  • The United States forced Germany to stop using unrestricted submarine warfare.
  • Germany eventually started using it again because they believed that it was important to victory in the war.

GLOBAL SPREAD OF WWI

  • The whole war was basically caused by treaty alliances.
  • Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
  • Russia joined the war because it was allied with Serbia.
  • Germany declared war on Russia because of its alliance with Austria.
  • France joins the war because of its alliance with Russia.

SPREAD OF WWI CONTINUED

  • Germany invades Belgium to have access to France.
  • Britain declared war on Germany because of its aliances with France and Belgium.
  • Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa join because they are British.
  • Japan declares war on Germany because of its alliance with Britain.
  • The U.S. Joins because of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare.

TOTAL WAR

  • A total war involves not only the military, but the economy and government of a nation.
  • WWI created huge demands for raw materials and manufactured goods.
  • Governments had to take control of economy and tightly control economic life.
  • Work hours were extended to reach enconomic demand from the war.

ROLE OF WOMEN

  • Women went to work in order to reach economic demands.
  • Women took jobs that previously belonged to men.
  • Many women worked in factories to produce shells.
  • The explosive shells were very dangerous.
  • This opportunity for women did help lead to sexual equality.

PROPAGANDA

  • Governments resorted to the restriction on cicil liberties, censorship of bad news, and propaganda.
  • Governments convinced civilians that defeat would result in the end of everything worth living for.
  • They tried hard to discredit the enemy.
  • Posters, pamphlets, and "scientific studies" depicted the enemy as savages.
