  • first permanent English settlement in North America

  • king of Scotland from 1567-1625 and first Stuart king of England from 1603-1625

  • chartered in 1606 and settled in 1607; was the first enduring English colony in North America
  • one of the first original 13 colonies located on the Atlantic coast of North America (one of the Southern colonies)
