Rebuilding Mode

  • Became more and more evil
  • Almost no distinction between those who went to church and those who didn’t
  • “Pastors” were not being cared for and had to “go to work”
  • No giving taking place
  • Nehemiah 13:1-11 sets the stage
Israel in rebuilding mode

Tithe

  • Given as a tenth
  • Based on our personal income
  • Given willingly
  • Given cheerfully
  • Support of local ministry

Given as a tenth of all (whole) income

Given according to our personal income, not someone else….how God has prospered us 2 Cor. 8-9, I John 3:17

Given willingly – because we want to

and cheerfully-word we get hilarious from 2 Cor. 9:6-8

Given to be placed in the storehouse – the room reserved for God’s gifts designed to support the local ministry Mal
3:10, Dt. 14:27, Lev 27:30-33, Deuteronomy 14:22-23

Tithe means a tenth – I Samuel 8:15-17
Tenth is measured from all
All produce of the land vs. Leviticus 27:30
All cattle vs. Leviticus 27:32
All dedicated articles 2 Chronicles 31:6
Everything – 2 Chronicles 31:6
First fruits – 2 Chronicles 31:5

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 2 Corinthians 9:6

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Best to give to the general fund and let the money be distributed based on the budget the church agrees upon.

but you give in accordance with this verse

where you decide....to choose one over another, to have two things to choose from and you pick one instead of another

willingly -

not where it generates discomfort or pain

or if you feel like you are being forced to do something you don't really want to do

with gladness or something you prefer to give to because you like it more than something else....

“I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed. Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them.

Malachi 3:6-7

Based on God’s character

Consistency

Preference to forgive

Ability

Self existent

Based on man’s sinfulness

Record of turning away

Record of disobedience

Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.“ But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’

“Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!
“But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’ “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me.

You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you.

I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “You have said terrible things about me,” says the Lord.

“But you say, ‘What do you mean? What have we said against you?’ “You have said, ‘What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins?

From now on we will call the arrogant blessed. For those who do evil get rich, and those who dare God to punish them suffer no harm.’”

Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name. “They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child. 18 Then you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”

Back to the LORD

Based on God’s character

Consistency - Offer is always there – changelessness, reliability, dependability 6

(Illus. Some were saying that God had not come back in glory because he changed his mind about it, and Israel remained constant and true……..)

Preference to forgive – he would rather forgive than condemn - compassionate 6, 17

Ability – He is able to make the offer and follow through – Lord of hosts, Almighty 7,10.11.12.14.17

Above the “politics” of life – self existent LORD 6, 13,14,16

Above – doesn’t need us yet desires a relationship with us………

Record of turning away ever since the time of your forefathers
(Record of disobedience – not keeping God’s decrees

Return to me………..

Accept God's Solution

vs. 8-15

Stop robbing God
(Illus. Reflects a denial of God’s ownership…………)
Bring – act of obedience and worship
Test – verify the authenticity or accuracy

Enjoy - list the benefits here

God’s bounty -

fullness
abundance

God’s protection

Our means of income

Our means of security
(Illus. STEWARD illustration…………)

Stop slandering God
Futile to serve God
(Illus. Quote from Eldridge about reality…….)

False identification –

call the arrogant blessed humble servants when they are actually self centered and self reliant

Illus. That defiant attitude “What’s so almighty about the almighty – the thinking that one is faster, stronger smarter, than God, bring him on, I can beat him anytime anywhere…hardly the attitude of a Spirit filled servant of the Lord..…)

False security – evil doers prosper instead of paying for their sin

Freedom for those who deserve bondage – no justice…………..

Decide

After hearing the message………….vs. 16-18

(Illus. By the way this illustrates the importance of hearing the Word proclaimed and explained……..)

Fellowship - They talked

Prayer in faith- God listened and heard

(Illus. God knows the issues in your heart………)

Commitment

To the local church – the storehouse

To ministries at large

As a result God took note…...said to his heavenly secretary, write this down……..Book of remembrance –

(Illus. Persian kings wrote significant events down like in a journal and reviewed them periodically – in Esther king couldn’t sleep one night Ester 2:23, 6:1-2……….)

….God takes note of those who serve Him in the book of his reign…and they receive special place as a result)
