POPE FRANCIS

  • Born in Flores on Dec. 17th, 1936
  • Eldest of 5 children
  • Father: Mono José Bergoglio. Mother: Regina Maria Sivori
  • In 6th grade he attended Wilfrid Barón delos, Santos Ángeles
  • Graduated from the Technical Secondary School with a chemical technicians diploma

  • At age 21 suffered from life threatening Pneumonia and 3 cysts
  • Worked as a bar bouncer and a janitor in chemical labortories
  • Worked a few years in the food section at Hicketheir-Bachmann Laboratory
  • Later joined the Jesuits

ELECTION TO PAPACY

  • Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who took the name Pope Francis, became the first Argentine pope
  • It took five ballots for Pope Francis to gain the two-thirds plus one majority needed to become elected
  • He has been a member of the Congregation of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments
  • Also a member of the Congregation for the Clergy, and Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life
  • This is why the Cardinals picked him for the position of the pope, and he was also widely respected

  • On St. Matthews feast day in 1953, Pope Francis experienced the presence of God
  • During this experience he says God called him to a religous life
  • In memory of the beginning of his Church life, Pope Francis chose the coat of Arms as his "motto"
